The right pair of ingredients does more than either one alone. The wrong pair irritates, cancels each other out or wastes your money. Here are the pairings worth knowing.
Pairings that genuinely work
- Vitamin C + SPF — morning defence. Antioxidants + UV protection is the single most effective anti-ageing combination.
- Niacinamide + hyaluronic acid — balances oil, hydrates, refines pores. Gentle enough for daily use.
- Retinal + peptides / PDRN — retinoids stimulate turnover; peptides and PDRN support the repair side.
- AHA + moisturiser with ceramides — exfoliate, then rebuild the barrier the same night.
- Centella / madecassoside + almost anything — soothes irritation from stronger actives.
- Vitamin C + Vitamin E + ferulic acid — the classic stability trio; the antioxidants protect each other.
- Niacinamide + zinc — sebum control and mild anti-bacterial support for oily / acne-prone skin.
- Squalane + retinal — squalane cushions the barrier while retinal does its work.
Pairings to be careful with
- Retinol + AHA/BHA the same night — usually too much. Alternate nights instead.
- High-strength Vitamin C + retinol — can be irritating; morning C, evening retinoid is safer.
- Multiple exfoliants at once (AHA + BHA + scrub) — recipe for barrier damage.
- Benzoyl peroxide + retinoids the same routine — benzoyl can deactivate some retinoids. Use on separate days or ~4 hours apart.
- Fragrance + already-sensitised skin — even 'natural' essential oils can flare irritation.
Common myths that don't hold up
- 'Vitamin C and niacinamide cancel each other out' — outdated. Modern formulations layer beautifully.
- 'You can't use hyaluronic acid in dry weather' — you can, as long as you seal it in with an occlusive on top.
- 'Natural means non-irritating' — many natural extracts and essential oils are the most sensitising ingredients in skincare.
