Double cleansing, explained — the foundation of Korean skincare

Why one cleanser isn't enough, how to layer oil and water without stripping, and the small nightly ritual that gradually transforms skin.

Oil cleanser and foam cleanser flat lay

Double cleansing is the foundation of Korean skincare — and really, of clear skin at any age. It's the difference between removing what water can (sweat, some dirt) and what oil can (SPF, sebum, pollution, makeup). Skip it, and everything you layer afterwards works less well.

What it is

Two cleansers, back-to-back, at the end of the day.

  1. Step 1 — an oil, balm or cleansing milk. Applied to dry skin, massaged for ~60 seconds, then emulsified with a little water. This dissolves oil-based grime.
  2. Step 2 — a low-pH water-based cleanser (gel or cream). Applied to damp skin, gently massaged, then rinsed. This removes sweat, water-based residue and lifts what the oil cleanser left behind.
