How to use the ilso Super Melting Sebum Softener — step-by-step blackhead routine

A step-by-step guide to using the ilso Super Melting Sebum Softener: how long to leave it on, how to follow with an oil cleanser, how often to repeat it, and why it beats pore strips.

If you've spent years pressing pore strips onto your nose and peeling off very little except a layer of your own skin barrier, the ilso Super Melting Sebum Softener is the kinder alternative you've been waiting for. It's a category of Korean skincare — the sebum softener, sometimes called a sebum melter or blackhead softener — that treats hardened sebum plugs from the inside out, rather than ripping at them from the outside.

What is a sebum softener?

A sebum softener is a lightweight, water-based treatment (usually a spray, essence or soaked pad) designed to break down oxidised sebum, dead skin and grime inside the pore. Used before cleansing, it dissolves the hardened plug so your cleanser can simply lift it away — no scrubbing, no picking, no strips.

There are various sebum softeners on the market — sprays, essences, soaked pads, even mild peeling toners — and they all do the same core job. They melt hardened sebum so your cleanser can lift it away, just with different strengths, textures and skin-type suitability. If your skin is on the sensitive or dehydrated side, the ilso Super Melting Sebum Softener is one of the kindest starting points.

Why it's better than pore strips for blackheads

Pore strips are satisfying. They are also, frankly, terrible for your skin. Here's the difference:

How to use the ilso Super Melting Sebum Softener

  1. In the evening, start on dry skin — before any cleansing.
  2. Spray 2–3 pumps directly onto the nose, chin or any congested area (or spritz onto a cotton pad and press for 30 seconds).
  3. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes. You may feel a very light tingle from the papaya enzyme and Centella — this is normal.
  4. Gently massage with clean fingertips for 30 seconds. Do not scrub.
  5. Now proceed with your usual oil cleanser — this is the crucial step.

Always follow with an oil cleanser

This is the part most people miss. The sebum softener does the melting; your oil cleanser does the lifting. Once the plug is softened, only an oil or balm cleanser can properly emulsify and rinse it away — a water-based cleanser alone will leave dissolved sebum sitting on the skin, ready to re-harden overnight.

What to layer next — the full evening ritual

Because the softener + double cleanse leaves skin very clean and slightly bare, the rest of your routine should focus on hydration and barrier repair. Do not follow with a second acid or strong retinoid the same night.

  1. Hydrating toner or essence — pat 1–2 layers into damp skin (heartleaf, centella and rice extracts are ideal).
  2. A calming or barrier-support serum — panthenol, madecassoside, niacinamide or PDRN.
  3. A lightweight but nourishing moisturiser — gel-cream for oily skin, ceramide cream for dry.
  4. Optional: a thin sleeping mask 1–2 nights a week to lock everything in.

Who it suits (and who should skip it)

Give it 3–4 weeks of consistent, gentle use. Blackheads will look softer, the T-zone smoother, and the temptation to reach for a pore strip will naturally fade. Browse the ilso Super Melting Sebum Softener and its perfect oil-cleanser pairings in the Litsy shop.
