Korean sheet masks — types, timing and how to use every drop of essence

A complete guide to Korean sheet masks: which material does what, when to use them, and clever ways to save and store the leftover essence so nothing goes to waste.

Hand holding a dewy Korean sheet mask with essence dripping

A Korean sheet mask is the quiet luxury of skincare: 15–20 minutes of stillness, a flood of essence, and skin that looks plumper, calmer and more luminous straight after. But not all sheet masks are the same — and that generous sachet of leftover essence is too good to throw away. Here's how to choose, use and make the most of every drop.

The main types of Korean sheet masks

Korean brands have turned the simple sheet mask into a small science. The material matters almost as much as the formula, because it controls how much essence reaches your skin and how evenly it delivers it.

When to use a sheet mask

How long to leave it on

Most Korean sheet masks are designed for 15–20 minutes. Leaving one on until it dries completely is a common mistake — the mask can start pulling moisture back out of your skin as it dries down. When the timer goes off, peel it off while still damp.

What to do with the leftover essence

That extra pool of essence in the sachet is the same formula that soaked the mask — concentrated, fresh and perfectly usable. Don't bin it.

  1. Pat the leftover essence from the sachet over your face, neck and chest after removing the mask.
  2. Massage any essence still on the sheet into your hands, elbows, knees or the backs of your arms.
  3. Decant the rest into a clean (sterilised) airtight container and use within 48 hours — best stored in the fridge.
  4. Soak a couple of cotton pads and use them as mini toner pads the next morning.
  5. Add a splash to your body lotion for an extra boost on dry areas.

How long leftover essence lasts, and how to store it

Because the sachet was opened and exposed to air, the clock starts ticking. Once decanted into a clean (sterilised) airtight container, leftover essence should be used within 48 hours and kept in the fridge. The cool temperature also feels wonderful on skin and helps preserve delicate actives like vitamin C or peptides.
