Prepping and treating skin for an occasion — the makeup-ready K-beauty ritual

A step-by-step guide to treating your skin in the days before a big occasion so makeup goes on smoother, lasts longer, and looks like real skin.

The best makeup is always the kind that looks like skin. No primer, setting spray or full-coverage foundation can replicate the smooth, hydrated canvas that comes from treating your skin well in the days before an occasion. Whether it's a wedding, year-end function, date night or a milestone celebration, a short, strategic K-beauty prep routine makes foundation sit better, colour last longer, and flash photography far more forgiving.

Start three to seven days before

Real skin change takes time. A last-minute face mask the morning of can boost hydration, but the texture, clarity and calmness that make makeup effortless build over several days. Think of this as a short, intensive version of your normal routine — not a completely different one.

Cleanse gently, twice a day

A calm barrier holds moisture better, reflects light more evenly, and prevents makeup from clinging to dry patches or sliding off oily zones. Use a low-pH, non-stripping cleanser morning and evening. If you wear makeup or SPF during the day, follow with an oil cleanser first as part of your double cleanse, then finish with a water-based cleanser.

Exfoliate once, carefully

Smooth skin texture is what makes foundation look like a second skin. One well-timed exfoliation, three to four nights before the event, removes the dead surface layer that catches light unevenly and causes foundation to look patchy. Choose a mild AHA, BHA or PHA at a strength your skin already tolerates, and follow with extra hydration afterwards.

Layer hydration

Korean skincare's signature layered hydration is exactly what pre-event skin needs. Apply a hydrating toner or essence to damp skin, then add a serum with hyaluronic acid, panthenol or polyglutamic acid, and seal with a moisturiser suited to your skin type. Well-hydrated skin looks fuller, fine lines look softer, and base products blend in rather than sitting on top.

Add a sheet mask two nights before

A single sheet mask two nights before the event gives skin a sustained hydration boost without the morning-of rush. Choose a mask with centella, ceramide, hyaluronic acid or rice extract for calm, plump, luminous skin. Avoid brightening or exfoliating masks right before the event — they can trigger sensitivity or flushing in some people.

The morning of: keep it simple

  1. Rinse or gently cleanse with a low-pH face wash.
  2. Press in a light hydrating toner or essence.
  3. Apply a few drops of a soothing serum if your skin tolerates it.
  4. Use a moisturiser that matches your skin type — gel for oily, lotion for normal, richer cream for dry.
  5. Finish with SPF. Let it sink in for a full 10–15 minutes before any makeup base.
  6. Use a lightweight, hydrating primer only if your foundation needs help gripping or blurring.

What to avoid the day before

Makeup that works with your skin

When skin is well-prepped, you need less coverage. A thin layer of skin tint, BB cream or a luminous foundation applied with a damp sponge often looks better than a full-coverage base. Conceal only where you need it, set lightly with powder, and let your skincare do the glow work underneath.

A few mindful days of gentle care, smart hydration and one well-timed exfoliation will do more for your event-day makeup than any single product. Explore the Litsy edit for hydrating essences, calming sheet masks and barrier-loving moisturisers that help any occasion face look its most natural, luminous self.
