Vitamin C is the brightening ingredient — a powerhouse antioxidant that fades dark spots, evens tone, boosts collagen and shields skin from daily UV and pollution damage. In Korean skincare it's rarely used at the aggressive 20% strengths popular in Western brands. K-beauty prefers gentler, layered percentages that suit sensitive skin, deliver glow without irritation, and pair beautifully with the rest of your routine.
What vitamin C actually does
- Brightens overall tone and adds visible glow within 2–4 weeks.
- Fades post-blemish marks, sun spots and hyperpigmentation over 8–12 weeks.
- Boosts collagen synthesis — helps soften fine lines and support firmness over time.
- Neutralises free radicals from UV, pollution and blue light — a true daytime antioxidant.
- Enhances the effectiveness of your SPF (it does NOT replace it).
The forms of vitamin C — not all are equal
The label 'Vitamin C' hides many different molecules with very different personalities. Knowing the form tells you what to expect from strength, stability and gentleness.
- L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA) — the purest, most researched form. Most potent but least stable and most irritating. Works at pH below 3.5.
- Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (EAA) — stable, oil-and-water soluble derivative. Gentler than LAA, converts efficiently in skin. Common in K-beauty.
- Ascorbyl Glucoside — very stable, very gentle. Slow-release brightening; excellent for sensitive skin and daily use.
- Magnesium / Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP / SAP) — mild, hydrating derivatives suited to sensitive and acne-prone skin.
- Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD Ascorbate) — oil-soluble, stable, luxurious feel. Penetrates deeply, minimal sting.
Percentages in K-beauty — the gentle sweet spot
Korean vitamin C tends to sit lower than Western products, and the results speak for themselves. K-beauty brands understand that consistency beats intensity — a gentler serum used every day outperforms a 20% treatment your skin can't tolerate.
- 2–5%: gentle everyday strength. Ideal for beginners, sensitive skin, and layering under SPF. Common in K-beauty essences and ampoules.
- 5–10%: the K-beauty sweet spot. Visible brightening and antioxidant protection with minimal risk of stinging.
- 10–15%: potent brightening, best on skin that already tolerates vitamin C. Still gentler than Western high-strength serums.
- 15–20%+: the Western high-strength range. Rare in Korean formulas — usually reserved for specialist ampoule treatments used 2–3 times a week, not daily.
Who vitamin C is for
- Dull, tired skin needing radiance.
- Post-blemish marks (PIH) and uneven tone.
- Sun spots, melasma and hyperpigmentation (pair with SPF, always).
- Mature skin — for collagen support and antioxidant defence.
- Anyone exposed to daily UV, pollution or blue light — which is everyone.
How to use vitamin C
- Use in the morning — this is when antioxidant defence matters most.
- Cleanse and apply to clean, dry (or barely damp) skin.
- Apply a few drops of vitamin C serum to the whole face and neck.
- Wait 30–60 seconds for absorption.
- Follow with moisturiser, then a broad-spectrum SPF 50. Non-negotiable — vitamin C is not a sunscreen.
- Start 2–3 mornings a week if new to it, then build to daily as skin adjusts.
Precautions and cautions
- Always pair with SPF. Vitamin C can make skin more photo-reactive if you skip sun protection — and without SPF, all the brightening work is undone by UV.
- Introduce slowly. Start with a lower percentage (5–10%) or a gentle derivative before jumping to LAA.
- Sensitive skin should avoid pure L-ascorbic acid — choose Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, MAP or Ascorbyl Glucoside instead.
- If your serum darkens, smells metallic or stings more than usual — it has oxidised. Bin it.
- Store away from heat, light and air. Small opaque bottles are best; airless pumps even better.
- Do not layer high-strength LAA with strong AHAs, BHAs or retinoids in the same routine — space them (vitamin C AM, actives PM) or alternate nights.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding — vitamin C is widely considered safe. Always check with your doctor.
Best pairings
- Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid — extend vitamin C's stability and antioxidant power. A classic trio.
- Niacinamide — the 'don't mix' myth is debunked. Modern formulas layer beautifully and can even boost brightening.
- Hyaluronic acid and glycerin — soften any potential dryness or tingle.
- SPF — the essential daytime partner. Vitamin C makes SPF work harder against UV damage.
- Retinoids — use at opposite times of day (vitamin C AM, retinoid PM) for the ultimate anti-ageing pairing.
What to expect
- Within 2 weeks: brighter, more even-looking skin; a subtle glow.
- Within 4–6 weeks: post-blemish marks visibly softer.
- Within 8–12 weeks: sun spots and pigmentation lighter; skin feels firmer and more resilient.
